Voice dictation

Dictation that writes what you said.

Most dictation tidies your words behind your back. VoiceType writes down what you actually said — and every change on top of that is yours to switch on.

  • Your words, as spokenThe transcript is what you said. Nothing is rewritten unless you ask for it.
  • A live transcript while you speakSee the words appear as you talk, so you know it’s listening.
  • Optional clean-upSpell your names and terms right, fix obvious grammar and, if you like, set a tone.
  • Choose your speech engineMeta Muse Voice Transcribe, Google Gemini, OpenAI, xAI Grok, Microsoft MAI-Transcribe, or Apple’s on-device recognizer.
  • A long dictation is never lostDictation history saves as you speak, every few seconds — so an interruption doesn’t cost you what you said.
  • Works with Bluetooth headsetsDictate through the headset you already wear.

Start the microphone

Start talking without leaving your app.

Tap the mic key — or start a session before you even open the keyboard.

The mic key

Tap the microphone on the keyboard. The first time, VoiceType opens briefly to start the session; then you go straight back.

Control Center

Add the VoiceType control to Control Center and start the microphone from any app.

Action button

On iPhones with an Action button, set it to start VoiceType with one press.

Lock Screen

Put the VoiceType control on your Lock Screen, ready before you unlock.

Siri

Say “Start dictation in VoiceType” and keep working where you are.

Live Activity

While the session is on, a Live Activity shows it — with Stop and Resume right there.

How voice works

The keyboard never records.

iOS doesn’t let keyboards use the microphone. So the VoiceType app runs the microphone session, and the keyboard shows you the words.

1. Tap the mic key

Or start a session from Control Center, the Action button, the Lock Screen or Siri.

2. VoiceType starts listening

The first time, the keyboard opens the VoiceType app for a moment to start the microphone session. The app records and transcribes.

3. Go back and keep talking

Return to your app with the back button in the top-left corner. Your words arrive in the keyboard as you speak.

You always know when it’s listening. The orange microphone indicator and a Live Activity show whenever the microphone session is on — and the Live Activity has a Stop button.

The keyboard

A keyboard you can use all day.

Not just a microphone button. A complete keyboard that follows the iPhone conventions you already know — and it’s free.

Full QWERTY

A complete keyboard with shift, numbers and symbols.

Autocorrect that learns

Autocorrect and predictions pick up your names and words.

Swipe typing

Glide across the letters to type a word.

Learns from your fixes

Correct a suggestion once and it remembers the word you chose.

Emoji search

Find the emoji you want by searching for it.

Number pad

Numbers when you need them, without hunting.

Space-bar cursor

Move the cursor with the space bar, plus smart spacing — the iPhone way.

Works offline

Typing works without Full Access and without a connection.

Privacy

What you type stays on your iPhone.

A keyboard sees everything you write. VoiceType is built so that it doesn’t send it anywhere.

Keystrokes stay on the device

What you type is processed on your iPhone. The keyboard does not send it to us.

Full Access, explained

Needed only so the keyboard and the VoiceType app can share voice, vocabulary, learned words and settings — on your iPhone.

AI only with your OK

Cloud speech engines are used only after you allow AI features. Say no, and voice uses Apple’s on-device recognition.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

Does VoiceType send what I type anywhere?

No. Keystrokes are processed on your iPhone, and the keyboard does not send what you type to us. The only exceptions happen when you use them: the text of a dictation you speak goes to the speech engine you chose, and if you have allowed AI features, words you type into the emoji search box may be sent to Google Gemini to find matching emoji. When you correct a suggestion, the word it suggested and the word you chose are saved to your account so the keyboard can learn. More in the privacy policy.

Why does VoiceType ask for Full Access?

Typing, autocorrect, predictions, swipe and emoji work without Full Access and offline. Full Access is needed only so the keyboard and the VoiceType app can share data on your iPhone — voice dictation, your vocabulary, learned words, typing corrections and settings.

Why does the VoiceType app open when I tap the microphone?

iOS doesn’t let keyboards record, so the keyboard itself never records. The VoiceType app runs the microphone session. The first time, the keyboard briefly opens the app to start it; then go back to your app with the back button in the top-left corner. You can also start a session from Control Center, the Action button, the Lock Screen or Siri without leaving your app. How voice works.

Can VoiceType see my passwords?

No. iOS never gives third-party keyboards secure text fields such as passwords — the system keyboard takes over automatically.

Which speech engines can I use?

Meta Muse Voice Transcribe, Google Gemini, OpenAI, xAI Grok, Microsoft MAI-Transcribe, or Apple’s on-device recognizer. Each dictation goes only to the engine you picked.

Does it work offline?

Typing works fully offline. Voice dictation works offline with Apple’s on-device recognizer; the cloud engines need a connection.

How much does it cost?

Typing is free. Voice dictation needs the VoiceType Monthly subscription: US$1.00 per month (local prices vary), with a 1-week free trial for new subscribers. Cancel anytime in iPhone Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions.

Does VoiceType make sounds?

No. VoiceType never makes a sound — no key clicks, chimes or spoken alerts. Everything is shown on screen, so it’s safe to use in a meeting.

Which devices does it support?

iPhone only.
