Set up the keyboard
How do I add the VoiceType keyboard?
- Install VoiceType from the App Store.
- Open the iPhone Settings app.
- Go to General → Keyboard → Keyboards → Add New Keyboard.
- Under Third-Party Keyboards, tap VoiceType.
You can start typing with it straight away — typing doesn’t need Full Access or a subscription.
How do I allow Full Access, and why?
- Open Settings → General → Keyboard → Keyboards.
- Tap VoiceType.
- Turn on Allow Full Access.
Full Access lets the keyboard and the VoiceType app share data on your iPhone — voice dictation, your personal vocabulary, learned words, typing corrections and settings. It is needed for voice. Typing, autocorrect, predictions, swipe and emoji all work without it. The keyboard does not send what you type to us either way.
How do I switch to VoiceType while I’m typing?
Tap the globe key on the keyboard to cycle through your keyboards, or touch and hold it and choose VoiceType from the list.
Why did the system keyboard appear in a password field?
That’s iOS protecting you. iOS never gives third-party keyboards secure text fields such as passwords, and switches to the system keyboard automatically. VoiceType comes back in the next ordinary text field.
Voice dictation
How do I start voice dictation?
Any of these starts a microphone session:
- The mic key on the VoiceType keyboard.
- Control Center — add the VoiceType control, then tap it from any app.
- The Action button — on iPhones that have one, assign it to VoiceType.
- The Lock Screen — add the VoiceType control.
- Siri — say “Start dictation in VoiceType”.
Voice needs Full Access, an account and the VoiceType Monthly subscription (with a 1-week free trial).
Why does the VoiceType app open when I tap the mic key?
iOS doesn’t let keyboards use the microphone, so the keyboard itself never records. The VoiceType app runs the microphone session and does the recording and transcription. The first time, the keyboard briefly opens the app to start the session; then you go back to your app. Starting from Control Center, the Action button, the Lock Screen or Siri doesn’t take you out of your app at all.
How do I get back to the app I was typing in?
Tap the back button in the top-left corner of the screen — iOS shows it with the name of the app you came from. You can also swipe right along the bottom edge of the screen to return to the previous app. Then keep talking: your words arrive in the keyboard as you speak.
How do I add VoiceType to Control Center, the Action button or the Lock Screen?
- Control Center: open Control Center, touch and hold an empty space (or tap +), tap Add a Control, and search for VoiceType.
- Action button: open Settings → Action Button, choose Controls, and pick the VoiceType control.
- Lock Screen: touch and hold the Lock Screen, tap Customize, choose the Lock Screen, tap one of the controls at the bottom, and pick VoiceType.
The exact steps can vary slightly between iOS versions and iPhone models.
How do I know the microphone is on, and how do I stop it?
Whenever the microphone session is on, iOS shows its orange microphone indicator and VoiceType shows a Live Activity on the Lock Screen and in the Dynamic Island on iPhones that have one. Tap Stop in the Live Activity to end the session, or Resume to start it again. VoiceType never makes a sound — every state is shown on screen.
Can I dictate with a Bluetooth headset?
Yes. VoiceType works with Bluetooth headsets. Connect the headset before you start the session.
How do I choose the speech engine or turn on clean-up?
Open the VoiceType app and choose the speech engine — Meta Muse Voice Transcribe, Google Gemini, OpenAI, xAI Grok, Microsoft MAI-Transcribe or Apple’s on-device recognizer. Clean-up is optional: it can spell the names and terms in your vocabulary right, fix obvious grammar and, if you want, set a tone. With clean-up off you get the words exactly as transcribed.
A dictation was interrupted — did I lose it?
No. VoiceType saves your dictation as you speak, every few seconds. Open Dictation history in the VoiceType app to find it and copy it.
Names keep coming out wrong
Add them to your Custom vocabulary in the VoiceType app — for example the correct spelling of people’s names, products or places — and keep clean-up on for vocabulary. Always review a dictation before you send it.
Subscription & billing
What’s free and what needs the subscription?
Typing is free — the full keyboard, autocorrect, predictions, swipe and emoji. Voice dictation needs the VoiceType Monthly subscription: US$1.00 per month (local prices vary), with a 1-week free trial for new subscribers.
How does the free trial work?
New subscribers get one week free. If you don’t cancel at least 24 hours before the week ends, the subscription starts automatically and is charged to your Apple Account. Trial eligibility is decided by Apple. Any unused trial time is forfeited if you buy the subscription before the trial ends.
How do I cancel?
- Open the Settings app on your iPhone.
- Tap your name → Subscriptions.
- Choose VoiceType Monthly → Cancel Subscription.
Cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends to avoid the next charge; you keep voice until then. The subscription renews automatically each month unless you cancel. Deleting the app or your account does not cancel the subscription.
How do I restore my subscription on a new iPhone?
Sign in to the App Store with the same Apple Account you subscribed with, open VoiceType and sign in to your VoiceType account. If voice doesn’t unlock, tap Restore Purchases in the app. Your vocabulary, typing corrections and dictation history come back when you sign in.
Can I get a refund?
Purchases are processed by Apple, so refunds are too. Request one at reportaproblem.apple.com, sign in, and choose the VoiceType purchase.
AI & privacy
Is what I type sent anywhere?
No. Keystrokes are processed on your iPhone and the keyboard does not send what you type to us. Two things leave the device only when you use them: the dictation you speak goes to the speech engine you chose, and — if you have allowed AI features — words you type into the emoji search box may be sent to Google Gemini to find matching emoji. When you correct a suggestion, the word it suggested and the word you chose are saved to your account so the keyboard can learn. See the Privacy Policy.
Can VoiceType read my passwords?
No. iOS never gives third-party keyboards secure text fields such as passwords — the system keyboard takes over automatically.
How do I change or withdraw AI permission?
VoiceType asks for your permission on a consent screen before it uses any cloud AI service. To change your answer, open the VoiceType app and go to Privacy & AI. Without AI permission, voice uses Apple’s on-device speech recognition and on-device clean-up, and nothing is sent to a third-party AI service.
Is my audio stored?
No. Your voice is streamed to the speech engine you chose and is not stored by us. With Apple’s on-device recognizer, it never leaves your iPhone. The text of your dictations is saved to your account as dictation history, so a long dictation is never lost.
Account
Do I need an account?
No. Tap Try it without an account on the first screen and everything works on this iPhone — the keyboard, and voice dictation with VoiceType Monthly, which belongs to your Apple Account. An account (email and password) only syncs your vocabulary, typing corrections and dictation history across devices; the same sign-in also works in the developer’s other apps, To-Do List and GenAI Studio.
I can’t sign in, or I forgot my password
- Check the email address for typos and make sure you’re online.
- Tap Forgot password? on the sign-in screen. We’ll email you a link to set a new password — check your spam or junk folder if it doesn’t arrive within a few minutes.
- Still stuck? Email us from the address on your account.
How do I delete my account and data?
In the VoiceType app, go to Account → Delete account. This permanently deletes your account and its data — dictation history, vocabulary, prompt, grammar instructions, typing corrections and settings versions — and the VoiceType data on your iPhone. It can’t be undone.
Please note: the same sign-in is used by To-Do List and GenAI Studio, so deleting it deletes that account everywhere. Deleting your account doesn’t cancel your Apple subscription — cancel that separately (see above). You can also email us to ask for deletion.
More questions
Does it work offline?
Typing — including autocorrect, predictions, swipe and emoji — works fully offline. Voice works offline with Apple’s on-device recognizer; the cloud speech engines need a connection.
Does VoiceType make any sounds?
No. There are no key clicks, chimes or spoken alerts. Everything VoiceType needs to tell you appears on screen.
Which devices are supported?
iPhone only.
