The short version
- What you type stays on your iPhone. Keystrokes are processed on the device. The keyboard does not send what you type to us.
- The keyboard never records. Voice runs in the VoiceType app, only while a microphone session is on, and your voice goes only to the speech engine you chose. We don’t store audio.
- Cloud AI only with your OK. Cloud speech engines and cloud clean-up are used only after you allow AI features in the app. If you decline, voice uses Apple’s on-device speech recognition and on-device clean-up only.
- What we store — your account email, your dictation history, your vocabulary and instructions, and the typing corrections you teach the keyboard — is kept in Google Firebase in the United States, so voice and sync work and a dictation is never lost.
- No ads, no tracking, no selling data, no data brokers.
- Delete it all from the app: Account → Delete account.
1. Who we are
VoiceType AI Keyboard (“VoiceType”, “the app”) is developed and operated by Sharath K., an individual developer based in Texas, USA (“we”, “us”, “our”). We are the controller of the personal information described in this policy. You can reach us at sharathck3@gmail.com.
VoiceType has two parts that work together on your iPhone: the keyboard, which you add in iPhone Settings and use in other apps, and the VoiceType app, which runs voice dictation and holds your account and settings.
2. What you type
- Keystrokes are processed on your iPhone. Autocorrect, predictions, swipe typing and the words the keyboard learns all run on the device. The keyboard does not send what you type to us.
- Without Full Access, typing, autocorrect, predictions, swipe and emoji all work, offline. iOS gives a keyboard without Full Access no network access and no way to share data with its app.
- With Full Access, the keyboard and the VoiceType app share data on your iPhone, through an App Group: voice dictation, your personal vocabulary, learned words, typing corrections and settings. Full Access is not used to send your typing anywhere.
- Typing corrections. When you correct a suggestion, the keyboard can learn from it: the word it suggested and the word you chose are saved to your account (see section 4) so the correction follows you.
- Emoji search. If you have allowed AI features, the words you type into the emoji search box may be sent to Google Gemini to find matching emoji. Nothing else you type is sent for this.
- Passwords and secure fields. iOS never gives third-party keyboards secure text fields such as passwords; the system keyboard takes over automatically.
3. What you say
- The keyboard itself never records. iOS does not let keyboards use the microphone. When you tap the mic key (or start from Control Center, the Action button, the Lock Screen or Siri), the VoiceType app starts a microphone session and does the recording and transcription.
- You can always tell it’s on. iOS shows its orange microphone indicator, and VoiceType shows a Live Activity with Stop and Resume, whenever the microphone session is on.
- Where your voice goes. Audio is streamed to the speech engine you picked — Meta Muse Voice Transcribe, Google Gemini, OpenAI, xAI Grok or Microsoft MAI-Transcribe — and is not stored by us. If you use Apple’s on-device recognizer, audio stays on your iPhone.
- Clean-up. If you turn on clean-up (your vocabulary spelled right, obvious grammar fixed, optional tone), the finished dictation text is sent to the clean-up model you chose, or processed on the device if you chose Apple on-device.
- Dictation history. While you speak, the text of your dictation is saved to your account every few seconds, so a long dictation can be recovered if anything goes wrong.
4. What we store
Account information
To use voice and sync you create an account with an email address and a password. Sign-in is handled by Firebase Authentication (Google). Your password is stored by Firebase in hashed form; we never see it. We keep your user ID and email, and Firebase records basic sign-in metadata such as when the account was created and last signed in. The same sign-in is shared with the developer’s other apps, To-Do List and GenAI Studio.
Stored with your account
The following is stored in Google Cloud Firestore, in the United States, under your account:
- Dictation transcripts — the raw text and the cleaned-up text, which engine was used, when, and which type of device — so you can recover a dictation.
- Your custom vocabulary, your speaker / dictation prompt text, and your grammar instructions.
- Typing corrections you teach the keyboard: the word it suggested and the word you chose.
- Settings versions, so you can restore an earlier version of your vocabulary, prompt or instructions.
Subscription information
The VoiceType Monthly subscription is sold and billed by Apple. Apple tells the app whether your subscription is active; we never receive your payment card details, billing address or Apple Account password.
Technical information
Our cloud providers keep standard service logs (for example IP address, time and type of request) to operate the service, prevent abuse and keep it secure. If you have chosen to share analytics with app developers in iPhone Settings (Privacy & Security → Analytics & Improvements), Apple may provide us with crash reports and diagnostics under Apple’s own policy. The app does not collect a device advertising identifier.
5. What stays on your iPhone
Some data never leaves your iPhone:
- Learned words and word usage that power predictions and autocorrect.
- Recent emoji.
- Keyboard settings.
- Audio when you use Apple’s on-device recognizer, and dictation text when you use on-device clean-up.
The keyboard and the VoiceType app share this on the device through an App Group when Full Access is on. It is removed when you delete the app.
6. What we don’t collect
- What you type — apart from the typing corrections and emoji search described above.
- Recordings of your voice. Audio is streamed to the speech engine you chose and not stored by us.
- Location, contacts, photos, health data or browsing history.
- An advertising identifier, advertising SDKs or analytics SDKs, and no tracking of you across apps or websites owned by other companies.
- No sale of personal information, to anyone, ever — and no data brokers.
7. How we use your information
- To provide the app: run voice dictation, keep your vocabulary, corrections and settings in sync, and let you recover a dictation.
- To run the AI features you choose, as described below.
- To support you when you contact us.
- To keep the service secure and prevent misuse.
- To comply with the law and enforce our Terms of Use.
We do not use your data for advertising, we do not build advertising profiles, and we do not train our own AI models on your content.
8. AI features and your consent
- The app asks for your permission on a consent screen before it uses any cloud AI service. You can change your answer at any time in the app under Privacy & AI.
- If you decline, voice uses Apple’s on-device speech recognition and on-device clean-up only, and nothing is sent to a third-party AI service.
- Each request goes only to the engine you picked — the speech engine for dictation, and the clean-up model for clean-up.
- Depending on the engine and your settings, your custom vocabulary, dictation prompt and grammar instructions may be sent along with a request so that names and terms come out right.
- If you have allowed AI features, emoji search terms may be sent to Google Gemini to suggest matching emoji.
- We do not use, or allow our providers to use, your data for advertising. AI providers may retain request data for a limited time under their own policies, for example for abuse monitoring.
- Transcriptions and clean-up can contain errors. Please review your text before you send it (see the Terms of Use).
9. Service providers
We use the following companies to run VoiceType. The AI providers are used only after you allow AI features, and only the one you picked receives a given request.
| Provider | What it does for VoiceType | Data it receives |
|---|---|---|
| Google Firebase (Google LLC) | Authentication (email + password); Cloud Firestore database in the United States | Account email and user ID; dictation history; vocabulary, prompt and grammar instructions; typing corrections; settings versions |
| Meta | Muse Voice Transcribe speech-to-text | Your voice while you dictate, if you choose it |
| Google (Gemini) | Speech-to-text; clean-up of a finished dictation; emoji search suggestions | Your voice while you dictate; dictation text and your vocabulary or instructions for clean-up; emoji search terms |
| OpenAI | Speech-to-text; clean-up of a finished dictation | Your voice while you dictate, with your vocabulary and dictation prompt; dictation text for clean-up |
| xAI (Grok) | Speech-to-text | Your voice while you dictate, if you choose it |
| Microsoft (MAI-Transcribe, Azure AI Speech, United States) | Speech-to-text | Your voice while you dictate, if you choose it |
| Cerebras (Qwen) | Clean-up of a finished dictation | Dictation text, with your vocabulary and instructions |
| Anthropic (Claude) | Clean-up of a finished dictation, if you choose it | Dictation text, with your vocabulary and instructions |
| Apple | App Store purchases and subscriptions; on-device speech recognition and on-device clean-up; Siri and Shortcuts if you use them; crash reports if you opted in | Handled under Apple’s own privacy policy; we never receive your card details |
Their privacy policies: Firebase, Google, Meta, OpenAI, xAI, Microsoft, Cerebras, Anthropic, Apple.
10. Permissions
iOS asks you before VoiceType can use any of these, and you can change your answer at any time in the iPhone Settings app.
| Permission | Used by | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Microphone | VoiceType app | Voice dictation — only while a microphone session is on. |
| Speech Recognition | VoiceType app | Apple’s on-device dictation, when you choose it or decline cloud AI. |
| Allow Full Access | Keyboard | Sharing voice dictation, vocabulary, learned words, typing corrections and settings with the VoiceType app on your iPhone. Typing works without it. |
| Live Activities | VoiceType app | Showing the microphone session on the Lock Screen, with Stop and Resume. |
| Siri & Shortcuts | VoiceType app | Starting dictation by asking Siri or from a shortcut. |
11. When data is shared
We share personal information only:
- with the service providers above, to run the features you use;
- when required by law, or to protect the rights, safety and security of users, the public or us;
- if the app is transferred to a new owner, in which case this policy continues to apply to your information and we will tell you before anything changes.
We do not sell personal information and do not share it for cross-context behavioral advertising.
12. Retention and deletion
- We keep the information stored with your account until you delete your account, or until you ask us to delete it.
- Delete your account in the app: Account → Delete account. This permanently deletes your account and its data — your dictation history, vocabulary, prompt, grammar instructions, typing corrections and settings versions — and the VoiceType data on your iPhone. Copies in our providers’ backups are removed on their normal backup cycles.
- One sign-in, several apps. The same sign-in is used by the developer’s other apps, To-Do List and GenAI Studio. Deleting it deletes that account everywhere, so you will no longer be able to sign in to those apps with it.
- Deleting the app removes the data kept only on your iPhone.
- Deleting your account does not cancel your Apple subscription. Cancel it in iPhone Settings → [your name] → Subscriptions.
You can also email sharathck3@gmail.com to ask for deletion, and we will confirm when it is done.
13. Security
Data travels over encrypted connections (HTTPS/TLS) and is encrypted at rest by Google Cloud. Firebase security rules restrict each account to its own data. No system is perfectly secure, so please use a strong, unique password.
14. Your rights and choices
- Choose what leaves your iPhone: use the keyboard without Full Access, pick Apple’s on-device recognizer, or withdraw AI permission in the app under Privacy & AI.
- See and edit your dictation history, vocabulary and settings in the app.
- Revoke permissions such as Microphone, Speech Recognition and Full Access in iPhone Settings.
- Delete your account and data in the app.
- Ask us for a copy of your data, a correction or deletion by emailing sharathck3@gmail.com from the email address on your account. We may need to verify that the request comes from you, and we will respond within the time the law requires (for example, 30 days under the GDPR or 45 days under California law).
15. If you are in the EEA, the UK or Switzerland
We process your personal data on these legal bases:
- Contract: to provide the app, your account and the subscription you signed up for.
- Consent: for cloud AI features, which you agree to in the app and can withdraw at any time under Privacy & AI (withdrawal does not affect processing that already happened).
- Legitimate interests: to keep the service secure and prevent abuse.
- Legal obligation: where the law requires us to keep or disclose information.
You have the right to access, rectify, erase, restrict or object to the processing of your personal data, the right to data portability, and the right to withdraw consent. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority (in the UK, the Information Commissioner’s Office). Please contact us first — we would like the chance to help.
16. If you are in California or another US state with a privacy law
Under the California Consumer Privacy Act as amended by the CPRA, and similar laws in other states (including Texas), you have the right to know what personal information we collect and how we use it, to access it, to correct it, to delete it, and not to be discriminated against for exercising these rights.
In the last 12 months we have collected these categories of personal information: identifiers (email address, user ID); customer records (account and subscription status); audio information (your voice while dictating, streamed to the speech engine you choose and not stored by us); user content (dictation transcripts, vocabulary, instructions and typing corrections); and account log-in credentials, which are sensitive personal information used only to let you sign in. The sources are you and your devices. We use them for the purposes in section 7 and disclose them to the service providers in section 9 for those purposes.
We do not sell or share personal information (as those terms are defined in California law), have not done so in the past 12 months, and do not use sensitive personal information for anything other than providing the app. To exercise a right, email sharathck3@gmail.com; you may use an authorized agent. If we decline a request, you can appeal by replying with “Appeal” in the subject line, and we will respond in writing within the time the law allows.
17. International transfers
We are based in the United States, and the data stored with your account is kept in the United States. Speech and AI providers may process requests in the United States and other countries where they operate. Where the law requires it, transfers from the EEA, the UK and Switzerland rely on safeguards such as the European Commission’s Standard Contractual Clauses used by our providers.
18. Children
VoiceType is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13 (or under the age of digital consent where you live). If you believe a child has given us personal information, contact us and we will delete it.
19. This website
This website sets no cookies, runs no analytics or advertising, and loads nothing from third parties. It is hosted on Firebase Hosting, which keeps standard server logs.
20. Changes to this policy
If we change this policy, we will post the new version here with a new effective date. If a change materially affects how we use your information, we will tell you in the app or by email before it takes effect.
